Japanese Tokonoma Tansu, Low Minimalist Display Cabinet, 1950s
An elegant low cabinet with three drawers and a storage bay with sliding doors, designed for use in or beside the tokonoma—the traditional Japanese alcove where art and objects of beauty are displayed.
Dimensions: height 36 cm, width 84.5 cm, depth 31 cm.
The sliding doors are faced with fine fabric in natural tones and fitted with small copper-rimmed finger pulls (hikite). Behind the doors is a shelf that provides space for ceramics, tea utensils, or decorative pieces.
On the right are three drawers with graceful iron handles. On the left runs a beautiful narrow cherry-wood post with a deep, glossy reddish bark that lends warmth and character to the piece.
One of the doors bears a hand-written inscription: Kusakabe seisaku (“made by Kusakabe”).
A refined and sought-after piece—both functional and sculptural. Perfect as a display cabinet for ceramics, tea ware, bonsai or ikebana, or as a subtle accent for a traditional tea setting.
