Bronze “Usubata” Ikebana Vase, Dragon & Tiger, Japan, 1990s
This impressive Japanese bronze usubata (a classic ceremonial ikebana vase) was designed for floral arrangement and features a strong, timeless silhouette with two elegant handles. It stands on three gracefully shaped feet, giving it a sculptural presence even without an arrangement.
Dimensions: height 26.5 cm, diameter 30 cm.
A richly detailed relief decoration runs around the body. One side shows a dragon among swirling clouds, while the other depicts a tiger in motion. The warm bronze tone, with darker patinated accents in the relief, adds depth and brings out the intricate details beautifully.
An usubata consists of two parts: the vase itself and a wide, removable dish at the top. This dish creates a stable “platform” for an ikebana arrangement and also catches water droplets, helping protect the surface underneath. It is practical for maintenance as well: the parts can be cleaned separately and fit together firmly.
The gold-colored inscription on the underside reads: “Commemorative Gift – March 31, 1992 – Chief of the Yamagata Prefectural Police Headquarters.”
Condition: in very good condition.
