Large Tanuki figure in Shigaraki earthenware, 1970s–1980s, Shōwa period, Japan.

This characterful Tanuki figure is made from traditional Shigaraki clay and depicts the well-known Japanese raccoon dog with its typical attributes: a wide straw hat, a sake flask, and a prominent belly and pouch.

Dimensions: height 50 cm, width 37 cm, depth 28 cm.

The Tanuki is finished in glazed Shigaraki earthenware, with deep brown and black tones contrasting with the light-coloured belly.

The Tanuki holds a special place in Japanese folklore and is known as a playful and mischievous creature which, according to old stories, has the ability to change its shape.

In Japan, Tanuki figures are traditionally placed at the entrances of homes, shops and restaurants as symbols of good fortune, protection, prosperity and successful business.

The straw hat symbolises protection from misfortune, while the sake flask is associated with abundance and hospitality. The prominent pouch traditionally represents financial luck and prosperity.
