Large sōsaku kokeshi by Sato Suigai, dating from the Shōwa period, Japan.

With its exceptional height of 59 cm, this kokeshi has a particularly slender and stately appearance. The figure is constructed from several turned wooden sections, with a serene head and a long cylindrical body.

The warm natural wood forms a beautiful contrast with the deep dark finish of the body. Circular decorative motifs feature stylised flowers, bamboo leaves and other traditional Japanese plant designs.

The face is rendered in a restrained manner, with closed eyes, finely painted black hair and a small red mouth. The simple form and calm colour palette give the kokeshi an elegant, almost sculptural presence.
