Japanese Salmon Wall Relief 1970s | Hokkai Woodcraft

A true Japanese classic: a bold, sculptural salmon relief carved into a decorative wooden plaque with a natural live edge and a warm brown lacquered finish.

Dimensions: height 22 cm, width 60 cm, depth 2 cm.

The carving is impressively deep and crisp. Scales, fins and head catch the light beautifully, giving the piece strong shadow and definition even from a distance. Up close, the craftsmanship really stands out, with fine gouge marks and subtle tonal variations in the hand-painted finish.

The original label reads “HOKKAI MOKKOGESHA” (北海木工芸社), a maker/atelier known for wooden folk craft (mingei). This type of salmon relief is often associated with northern Japan, especially Hokkaidō, where salmon is a culturally and historically significant motif. On the left you’ll find the maker’s signature accompanied by a red seal stamp (hanko).
