Japanese Sōsaku Kokeshi, Wooden Interior Object, c. 1970
An elegant Japanese sōsaku kokeshi from the 1970s, created in a very restrained and sculptural form.
Dimensions: height 46 cm, diameter 10 cm.
This wooden kokeshi has a long, slender body with a soft waist and a large rounded head. The design is simple and powerful, without painted facial features or strong decoration, allowing the natural wood grain to take full focus. The warm honey-brown colour, darker variations and visible grain give the piece a calm, organic presence.
The proportions are particularly beautiful: the large head, narrow neck and tall stylised body make this kokeshi feel almost like an abstract wooden sculpture. It is a refined example of the sōsaku tradition, in which Japanese craftsmen developed more personal and modern interpretations of the classic kokeshi form.
Today, this kokeshi lends itself beautifully as a decorative Japanese interior object on a cabinet, bookshelf, low table or in a quiet composition with ceramics, wood and natural materials. Its sober form makes it especially suitable for a minimalist, warm modern or Japanese-inspired interior.
In very good vintage condition, with beautiful wood grain, light patina and minimal signs of use consistent with age and material.
