Jean Lallemand, ‘Chemin à Gréoux’, Provençal Gouache Painting, 1980s

Atmospheric painting by the French artist Jean Lallemand, titled on the reverse Chemin à Gréoux, Hte Provence. The work depicts a quiet road in Gréoux, Haute-Provence, with white Provençal houses, soft hills in the background and tall cypress trees rising strongly through the composition.

The composition is built up in soft Mediterranean tones: pale blue, grey-green, cream, olive green and deep cypress shades. The paint is applied in a loose and confident manner, with broad brushstrokes and simplified forms that give the landscape a modern and decorative character.

The technique appears to be gouache, or another opaque painting medium, on paper or card. The matte surface, visible brushwork and clear colour fields give the piece a calm yet highly stylish presence.

Jean Lallemand was a French painter from Saint-Quentin, born in 1928 and deceased in 2024. His work is associated with colour, personal expression and a contemporary painterly approach.

The work is signed lower right and titled on the reverse. It is nicely framed with a blue-grey mount and a gilt frame. The piece is in beautiful vintage condition, with normal age-related traces to the frame and reverse, consistent with age and use.
