Glazed Shigaraki Tanuki, 1970s, Japan
A characterful Japanese tanuki from the 1970s, crafted from glazed earthenware in warm shades of cream, brown and deep black.
Dimensions: H 23 × W 17 × D 16 cm.
The tanuki has a friendly, slightly upturned face and a rounded belly. Fine, incised lines give the fur a lively texture, creating a beautiful contrast with the glossy glaze.
In one paw, he holds a walking stick with a sake bottle attached, while a traditional account book hangs at his side. In Japanese folklore, these attributes symbolise prosperity, trust and good fortune.
A handwritten Japanese signature is present on the inside.
In lovely vintage condition, with minor signs of use.
A charming Japanese good luck symbol with a warm, decorative appeal. A characterful accent for the home, an entrance hall or a sheltered spot in the garden.
