Vintage Japanese Kintarō Doll with Carved Wooden Bear

A highly decorative Japanese display featuring Kintarō, the legendary boy from Japanese folklore, depicted beside a boldly carved wooden bear.

Kintarō stands in a lively, combative pose, holding a thick decorative cord draped around the bear. He wears a bright red apron bearing the golden character 金, meaning “gold” and referring to his name: Kintarō, or “Golden Boy”. Silver and purple cords with elegant tassels give the composition a festive appearance.

The bear is entirely carved from wood and has an expressive form, with clearly defined fur, paws and facial features. Both figures are arranged on a broad, dark-finished wooden base with an organically shaped edge.

Kintarō is based on the legendary childhood of Sakata no Kintoki, a celebrated warrior from the Heian period. In Japan, he is traditionally portrayed as an exceptionally strong and courageous boy who befriended the animals of the mountains. Kintarō dolls were often displayed for Tango no Sekku, now celebrated as Children’s Day on 5 May, symbolising strength, good health and a prosperous future for children.

With its generous proportions, dynamic composition and combination of textile, wood and finely painted details, this object makes a striking display for a Japanese-inspired interior, shop, display cabinet or collection of traditional Japanese dolls.
