Vintage Sōsaku Kokeshi ‘Spirit of the Wheat’ by Sadao Kishi, ca. 1968–1980

A refined Japanese sōsaku kokeshi by master artist Sadao Kishi, crafted from light-coloured wood and distinguished by its exceptionally slender and balanced form.

The design is known as Spirit of the Wheat and is also associated with the title Emptiness of Mind. Its serene facial expression, closed eyes and small red mouth give the doll a calm, almost meditative presence. A simple rounded hair bun sits above the softly shaped head.

The elongated body is composed of several geometric volumes and decorated with finely incised and coloured ears of wheat. This restrained decoration reflects the Japanese appreciation of nature, the seasons and the beauty of simple materials. The warm golden tone and visible grain of the wood form an essential part of the design.

This design received a Premier Prize in 1968. Sadao Kishi is a respected artist within the creative kokeshi tradition, and his work is appreciated by collectors for its combination of understated expression, elegant proportions and refined woodworking.

Its tall, slender silhouette makes this kokeshi particularly attractive on a cabinet, bookshelf or display. It creates a stylish and tranquil accent, whether shown independently or combined with other Japanese objects.
