Vintage Kokeshi by Hideo Ishihara, 1960s, Japan
A Japanese creative kokeshi from the 1960s by renowned artist Hideo Ishihara (1925–1999).
Dimensions: H 30 × Ø 9 cm. Unsigned.
The kokeshi has an elegant, elongated silhouette, with a large, rounded head and a distinctive black hairstyle. The warm, natural colour of the wood contrasts beautifully with the deep black painted details.
The slender body is finished in a rich shade of red, decorated with a rhythmic pattern of abstract black brushstrokes. The simple lines and bold colour combination give the design a striking graphic character.
Hideo Ishihara was an important figure in the Japanese sōsaku kokeshi movement, the art of creative kokeshi. Born into a family of traditional kokeshi makers, he developed a distinctive artistic style of his own. His work received numerous awards, including Japan’s prestigious Prime Minister’s Award.
In lovely vintage condition, with a warm natural patina and light signs of use and age.
A rare and characterful piece of Japanese folk art, bringing together simplicity and artistic expression.
A valuable addition to any collection of creative kokeshi and a beautiful piece for admirers of Japanese art.
