Product Details

Decorative Japanese papier-mâché mask, dating from the 1950s–1960s. The mask represents Ebisu, or Ebisu-sama, one of the Japanese Seven Lucky Gods, traditionally associated with prosperity, trade and good fortune.

Dimensions: height 24 cm, width 20 cm, depth 7 cm.

The mask has an expressive and friendly face with an open mouth, red lips, black moustache, beard and sideburns. The tall blue headdress gives the piece a strong presence, while the warm skin tones and hand-painted details create a charming and authentic appearance. The slight irregularity of the papier-mâché, the visible brushstrokes and the natural patina give the mask a particularly lively folk character.

On the inside, there is a Japanese label. The large text includes “商売繁昌” and “家内安全”, which can be translated as “prosperity in business” and “safety and well-being in the home”. The side text reads “紙張子細工”, referring to papier-mâché or paper hariko craftsmanship.

The mask is fitted with a hanging cord and is intended as a decorative wall object. It is in beautiful vintage condition, with normal age-related traces, discolouration, small marks and patina consistent with its age and material.

A rare and atmospheric Japanese mask with a strong decorative presence. Beautiful as an authentic interior accent in a Japanese, wabi-sabi, folk art, eclectic or minimalist interior.
