Rare Kokeshi Set by Aida Seihō, 1970s, Japan
A pair of Japanese creative kokeshi from the 1970s, crafted by the renowned artist Aida Seihō, also known as Aida Harumine (1926–1998).
Dimensions of the larger figure: H 19 × Ø 4 cm.
The two slender wooden figures form a charming mother-and-child composition. Their large, gently tilted heads with deep black painted hairstyles lend the pair a soft, almost poetic presence.
The bodies are finished in warm shades of red and deep black, with expressive, brush-like textures and subtle lighter accents.
Aida Seihō was an important figure in Japan’s sōsaku kokeshi movement, known for its creative approach to traditional kokeshi dolls. His work received numerous awards. The larger figure bears the artist’s red maker’s seal (hanko) on its underside.
In lovely vintage condition, with gentle signs of age.
A highly decorative pair with understated Japanese elegance.
A lovely addition to any collection of creative kokeshi or Japanese art.
