Product Details

A beautiful Japanese creative kokeshi from the 1970s, designed by renowned artist Masao Watanabe (1917–2007).

Dimensions: H 30 × Ø 10 cm.

The design is known as Chigo Zakura, loosely translated as ‘Cherry Blossom Child’. The kokeshi features a large, rounded head with delicately painted hair and a serene facial expression. Its slender wooden body is finished in deep black and burgundy tones, with the natural wood grain subtly visible beneath the surface.

Chigo Zakura is one of Watanabe’s most celebrated designs, for which he received the prestigious Japanese Prime Minister’s Award in 1963. A fascinating historical detail is that examples of this design were presented to The Beatles during a ceremony in London in 1965.

The underside bears the artist’s Japanese calligraphic signature and a red hanko seal.

In good vintage condition, with minor signs of wear consistent with its age.

An iconic example of Japanese creative kokeshi art, bringing together simplicity, colour and refined wood craftsmanship. A distinctive collector’s piece and an elegant decorative accent for a contemporary interior.
