Product Details

A Japanese theatre and dance katana (buyōtō) from the 1960s, featuring a warm reddish-brown lacquered wooden scabbard and richly decorated metal fittings.

Dimensions: H 92 × W 6 × D 7.5 cm.

The gently curved wooden scabbard (saya) is finished in deep reddish-brown lacquer with fine golden speckles. The surface shows visible signs of use, including scratches and areas of lacquer loss, giving the sword its distinctive, timeworn character.

The handle is wrapped in light beige cord over a woven base. Small metal ornaments are set between the bindings, while the elegantly pierced handguard (tsuba) is decorated with dragon motifs and finely detailed relief work. The metal fittings display a warm, natural patina.

The blade is made of synthetic material with a silver-coloured metallic finish, reflecting its original purpose as a prop for traditional Japanese theatre and dance performances.

A long, rust-brown fastening cord (sageo) hangs from the scabbard, finished with decorative knots and two tassels. Its warm tones complement the lacquered surface and the light-coloured handle.

In authentic vintage condition, with visible signs of use and age, including areas of lacquer damage to the wooden scabbard.

A decorative collector's piece with a distinctly Japanese character. Beautiful as wall decoration or as an addition to a collection of traditional Japanese swords and theatrical artefacts.

The pictured display stand is not included.
