Wooden Japanese Fumidai, Step Stool with Calligraphy, 1930s
Characterful Japanese fumidai – a traditional wooden step stool as used in homes, shops and workshops.
Dimensions: height 60 cm, width 54 cm, depth 43 cm.
The piece is made from solid softwood, sugi (Japanese cedar), with clearly visible growth rings, knots and a deeply aged, warm tone.
The top and steps show signs of intensive use: softly rounded edges, small nicks and variations in colour in the wood.
On the inside, hand-painted Japanese calligraphy has been preserved – most likely a name and short note from a previous owner – which gives the piece an extra personal and authentic touch.
In a contemporary interior, this fumidai is much more than just a step stool. It works beautifully as a display for a small bonsai, ceramics, a vase with branches or a sculpture. Next to a sofa or armchair it can also serve as a low side table for books, a lamp or tea ceremony objects.
A simple, honest utilitarian piece: perfect for anyone who loves weathered wood, wabi-sabi and a subtle Japanese touch in their interior.
