Japanese Wooden Itomaki Winding Wheel, Wooden Interior Object, 1900–1950

A large Japanese wooden winding wheel, originally part of a traditional itomaki or larger wooden reel used for winding silk, yarn, cord, or other textile materials.

Dimensions: diameter 59 cm, depth 3 cm.

This round wooden object is constructed from curved segments, with two sturdy cross slats and a square central opening where an axle or fitting would originally have passed through. The construction is beautifully visible: wooden joints, peg structures, dark nail heads, and subtle old repairs reveal the handcrafted character of the piece.

The warm reddish-brown wood, the architectural circular form, and the calm cross structure give this object a strong graphic presence. Traces of use, small scratches, colour variations, and old joints make it feel not only decorative, but also authentic and richly aged.

Today, this wooden winding wheel makes a striking interior accent. It works beautifully as a wall object, placed freely against a wall, above a low cabinet, or as part of a restrained composition with wood, ceramics, or plants. The form is simple, powerful, and sculptural, with a fine balance between Japanese craftsmanship, patina, and minimalist presence.
