Product Details

A refined Japanese creative kokeshi from the 1970s, crafted by the renowned artist Watanabe Masao (1917–2007). The design is titled 'Chigo-Zakura', loosely translated as 'Cherry Blossom Child'.

Dimensions: H 30 × Ø 10 cm.

The wooden figure has an elegant silhouette with a large, rounded head. The jet-black hair is delicately painted with graceful, flowing brushstrokes. The warm, natural wood tone contrasts beautifully with the dark body.

The slender body is finished in deep black-brown tones, accented by expressive, rich red brushstrokes. The subtle visibility of the wood grain enhances its natural character.

Watanabe Masao was a pioneer of Japanese sōsaku kokeshi, the creative kokeshi movement. His work received numerous awards, including the prestigious Prime Minister's Award in 1963.

The underside bears Japanese calligraphy, including the artist's signature and a partially faded red hanko seal. White Japanese calligraphy on the back reads 'Ikaho', referring to the Japanese town renowned for its hot springs.

In lovely vintage condition, with a warm natural patina and minor signs of age and use.

A distinctive collector's piece that brings together minimalist design, fine Japanese craftsmanship and artistic expression.
