Lacquered Dance Katana, Buyōtō, 1960s, Japan
A decorative Japanese theatre and dance katana (buyōtō) from the 1960s, featuring warm reddish-brown lacquer, refined metal fittings and a distinctive vintage character.
Dimensions: H 104 × W 7 × D 8 cm.
The gently curved wooden scabbard (saya) is finished in deep reddish-brown lacquer, subtly enriched with fine golden speckles that catch the light. Natural ageing and areas of wear lend the surface a beautifully timeworn appearance.
The handle is traditionally wrapped in light beige cord over a woven base. Small metal ornaments are visible between the bindings, while the pommel and fittings surrounding the handguard display a warm, dark patina.
The richly decorated metal handguard (tsuba) features elegant openwork dragon motifs and finely detailed relief decoration. The silver-coloured metal blade provides a striking contrast to the warm tones of the scabbard and handle.
A distinctive feature is the long, rust-brown fastening cord (sageo), finished with decorative knots and two tassels. It lends the sword an elegant, almost theatrical appearance.
In authentic vintage condition, with visible signs of use and age, including wear and small areas of damage to the lacquer.
A characterful collector’s piece that brings together the aesthetics of traditional Japanese sword design and the world of theatre and dance. Beautiful as wall decoration or as a distinctive accent in an interior.
