Granite Kasuga Garden Lantern, c. 1970–1980, Japan
A slender Japanese garden lantern with an elegant roof and a softly weathered appearance.
Dimensions: height 120 cm, diameter approximately 35 cm. Total weight: 110 kg.
The Kasuga style takes its name from Kasuga Taisha, a Shinto shrine in Nara with around 3,000 stone and hanging lanterns. Stone lanterns originally came to Japan with Buddhism. The lotus petals carved into the base recall the lotus as a Buddhist symbol of purity.
The slender column supports a light chamber with rectangular openings and a crescent-shaped window. Above it rises a steep roof with carved lines, crowned by a stone sphere. The finely speckled, pale grey granite has developed a beautiful natural patina outdoors.
An elegant ornament beside a garden path or among greenery. The rough, uneven underside of the base needs to be set into soil or sand for stability.
In lovely condition, with natural weathering and light signs of use consistent with outdoor display. The lantern consists of separate pieces.
