Large Japanese Wooden Daikoku Statue, 1930s

A large and expressive Japanese wooden statue of Daikoku, one of the Seven Lucky Gods, symbolising prosperity, wealth, commerce, and abundance.

This statue dates from the late Taishō to early Shōwa period. Daikoku is depicted with his broad smile, rounded facial features, large lucky mallet, and sack over his shoulder. He stands on rice bales, a classic symbol of harvest, prosperity, and material abundance.

The statue is powerfully and finely carved, with deep detailing in the face, clothing, mallet, and decorative base. The warm wood tone, soft sheen, and subtle gilt accents give the piece a rich yet calm presence. The carved characters in the base refer to traditional forms and proportions within the iconography of Daikoku.

The piece is in good used condition, with normal signs of age, light wear, drying lines, and a few small missing or imperfect details that are not disturbing. These traces are consistent with its age and handmade character.

A highly symbolic interior accent that brings warmth, luck, and character to any type of interior. Beautiful as a freestanding object on a pedestal, cabinet, console, or in a calm setting where one strong Japanese sculpture can take centre stage.
