Blog Japanese Haori (羽織)

The haori (羽織) is a traditional Japanese jacket (hip or thigh length) traditionally worn over a kimono.

The haori resembles a shortened kimono without overlapping front panels and usually has a thinner collar than that of a kimono.

This short kimono is usually tied at the front with two short cords, which are attached to small loops sewn into the garment.

Brief history:

During the Edo period, there was strong economic growth in Japan.

The wealthy merchant classes externalized their prosperity by their clothing.

The haori was an excellent way to show that you had enough money to pay for this extra piece of textile.

Initially, therefore, the haori was a garment worn only by men.

In the early 19th century, the geishas of Fukagawa (Tokyo) also began wearing haori over their kimono.

The geisha of Fukagawa, known for their stylish and unusual fashion choices, set a trend that made women wearing haori commonplace by the 1930s.

In contemporary Japan, haori are worn by both men and women.
