Ainu Woodcarving – Fox with Bowl Form, Hokkaidō, 1990s
Charming hand-carved fox from Hokkaidō with a hollowed, bowl-shaped recess in the back. This makes the piece not only decorative but also functional: perfect as a catchall (vide-poche) for keys, smartphone or glasses, as a small bowl for nuts or sweets, or as a pen holder on the desk.
The warm honey-brown tone with darker carved details highlights the soft contours and lively expression.
Dimensions: height 20 cm, width 32 cm, depth 20 cm.
The underside bears an incised Japanese inscription and is dated Heisei 2 (1990).
In lovely original condition with natural signs of age and use visible in the photos: light scratches, subtle craquelure, and a few drying lines around the opening—exactly the kind of patina that underscores the charm of this Ainu carving.
