Product Details

Dimensions: height 5 cm, diameter 29 cm.

A large antique Japanese porcelain plate from the Meiji period, produced in Arita and marked Hizen 肥前, the historic province in which the important Japanese porcelain centre of Arita was located.

The plate is hand-decorated in varying shades of cobalt blue, complemented by fine golden-brown outlines and a red mark. The scene depicts a tranquil Japanese landscape with wooded rock formations, water, sailing boats and monumental mountains rising above the clouds.

Its asymmetrical composition, generous open spaces and refined brushwork give the landscape a calm and almost poetic atmosphere. The deep blue tones contrast beautifully with the lightly tinted porcelain, while the subtle golden-brown details add further depth to the decoration.

With its generous proportions, the plate is particularly attractive as a decorative wall plate, a central object in a display cabinet or part of a collection of Japanese porcelain.

In attractive antique condition, with light signs of use, surface discolouration and wear consistent with its age and handcrafted production.

An atmospheric example of Japanese Arita porcelain from the Meiji period, combining a classical landscape with a strong decorative presence.
