Antique Carved Wooden Female Bust ‘Sabine’, Dated 1845

A highly expressive hand-carved wooden female bust, inscribed on the reverse with the name Sabine and the date 1845.

The woman is depicted with an elongated face, closed eyes, pronounced features and hair descending on either side in heavy curled forms. Her broad shoulders and powerful head give the sculpture a monumental presence despite its relatively compact dimensions.

Marks left by the carving tools remain clearly visible across the entire surface. This coarse, rhythmic treatment gives the wood a lively texture and emphasises the distinctly handcrafted character of the sculpture. Deep brown tones, aged discolouration and natural patina enhance its restrained and timeworn appearance.

The precise origin and identity of the maker are unknown. The date 1845 on the reverse may indicate the year of production, although this cannot be confirmed without further documentation.

Today, the bust makes a powerful independent art object for a pedestal, low cabinet, bookcase or central display. Its rough surface and strong silhouette make it particularly suited to an eclectic, brutalist or folk-art-inspired interior.
