Product Details

Dimensions: height approx. 42 cm, diameter approx. 30 cm.

An imposing antique Japanese chatsubo, a traditional storage jar for tea leaves, crafted from substantial stoneware during the Meiji period, 1868–1912.

The jar has a powerful ovoid body with a short neck and a broad outward-rolled rim. Its simple, balanced form retains visible throwing marks, emphasising the handcrafted character of the object.

The surface displays deep earthy shades of dark brown, rust and near black. Localised discolouration, subtle horizontal throwing lines and a warmly weathered patina give each side its own individual appearance. The restrained finish allows the form, material and natural irregularities to remain fully visible.

Chatsubo were traditionally used in Japan to store and protect tea leaves. Larger storage jars could be sealed with paper or textile and held both a practical and ceremonial place within Japanese tea culture.

Today, this jar makes a particularly strong decorative object for a calm, natural or Japanese-inspired interior. It can be displayed independently, used as a floor vase for dried branches or presented as a sculptural accent on a low wooden display.

Its understated form, earthy colouring and visible age relate beautifully to the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic, which values simplicity, impermanence and the beauty of irregularity.

In attractive antique condition, with wear, dark marks, discolouration, superficial scratches and natural irregularities consistent with the 1868–1912 period and its original use. No distracting damage is visible.

An authentic Japanese chatsubo with a monumental form, beautiful patina and a timeless, contemplative presence.
