Antique Japanese Wooden Hibachi with Copper Liner, ca. 1900–1920

A refined antique Japanese hibachi dating from the late Meiji to early Taishō period, approximately 1900–1920. Due to its compact and low proportions, this type was most likely used as a personal brazier or hand warmer, also known as a te-aburi. Comparable wooden examples fitted with copper liners are generally dated to this period.

The hibachi is crafted from solid wood and has an organically shaped, faceted outer rim carved with concentric lines. A refined decoration of leaves and curling stems in red, green and gold-coloured outlines extends around the upper surface. This restrained ornament contrasts beautifully with the warm brown tones and natural grain of the wood.

At the centre is the original copper liner, once filled with ash and glowing charcoal. Age and use have given the copper a particularly lively patina, with oxidation, dark marks and warm metallic variations that enhance its authentic character. Wooden hibachi fitted with metal containers were traditionally used to provide localised warmth and, on occasion, to keep water warm.

The natural materials, visible traces of use and restrained handcrafted form make this an appealing mingei object: a utilitarian piece in which function and Japanese folk craftsmanship come together naturally.

Today, the hibachi can be displayed beautifully as a decorative bowl, holder for dried flowers, small presentation piece for collected objects or as an independent art object on a low table or cabinet. Use with burning charcoal is not recommended.

In attractive antique condition, with wear, discolouration, oxidation, minor scratches and natural irregularities consistent with more than a century of age and its original use.
