Antique Japanese Wooden Kibachi Bowl, 1900s

An exceptionally weathered Japanese wooden kibachi, hand-hollowed from solid wood, with a deep rounded form and a beautiful dark patina.

This large Japanese wooden bowl dates from the Meiji period. Kibachi were traditionally used as functional wooden bowls, among other things for mixing or kneading ingredients. Through age, use and natural ageing, this example has gained a particularly strong presence.

The bowl shows a deep black-brown patina, with warm wood tones appearing through the surface. Its handmade character is clearly visible in the irregular round shape, the soft curve of the bowl and the timeworn structure of the wood. The cracks, open seams, old repairs and losses along the rim make the object visually powerful and give it exactly the raw, sculptural beauty that works so well in a wabi-sabi interior.

Today, this kibachi is primarily a decorative statement piece. Beautiful as a large fruit bowl, as a base for moss, dried flowers or branches, or as a standalone object on a low table, console, pedestal or in a quiet interior setting. Through the combination of form, patina and visible signs of age, the bowl feels primitive, warm and highly refined at the same time.

The condition is strongly weathered and decorative, with visible cracks, wear, patina and signs of age consistent with its age and original use. A unique Japanese object full of history, character and the visible traces of time.
