Antique Japanese Katana-bako Sword Chest / Storage Box, 1890s
Antique Japanese katana-bako from the Meiji period, dating to circa 1890.
This long, narrow wooden chest was used for the safe storage of a Japanese sword (katana).
Dimensions: height 16.5 cm, width 16 cm, depth 112 cm.
The chest features a long pull-out drawer and a lockable front fitted with traditional metal hardware. The original key is no longer present, but the front can still be secured using the existing locking knob.
Over time, the wood has developed a particularly beautiful, warm patina. Signs of use, variations in colour and small imperfections reflect its age and contribute to its authentic character.
A restrained and elegant Japanese utilitarian object with a strong sculptural presence, equally appealing as a collector’s piece or as a decorative element in a contemporary interior.
