Antique Japanese Tansu Chest of Drawers – Meiji Period, ca. 1900
An authentic Japanese tansu chest from the Meiji period (ca. 1900), distinguished by the beautiful contrast between the warm brown wood of the frame and the lighter-toned drawer fronts.
Dimensions: height 53 cm, width 91 cm, depth 45 cm.
The chest features two spacious drawers, each fitted with black forged-iron hardware and round lock plates. The metal handles have a simple, robust design that highlights the understated elegance of the piece. Sturdy side handles are mounted for transport, with one missing — a minor detail that does not detract from its functionality or character.
The wood bears a richly aged patina, with traces of time and use that embody the wabi-sabi aesthetic: the quiet beauty of imperfection and tradition.
Compact and versatile, this tansu works beautifully as a storage chest, a low console, or as a refined pedestal for ceramics, artworks, or plants.
