Product Details

This original Japanese sliding door (hikido) is a striking architectural element with a calm, graphic presence.

Dimensions: height 178 cm, width 110 cm, depth 5.5 cm. Dating: ca. 1890 (Meiji period).

The wooden frame is built in a clean grid and fitted with metal mesh, creating a beautiful balance between warmth and structure. The surface is wonderfully aged: variations in tone, wear and traces of long use give the door a unique patina that instantly adds depth and history.

A rare detail is the small hatch that opens, as shown in the photos. At the bottom, the door runs on two heavy, solid copper wheels—an impressive technical feature that highlights its original functionality. The hardware and handles are simple and honest, typical of Japanese craftsmanship where clarity and ease of use are essential.

Today, this piece works beautifully as a decorative wall panel or statement element in a minimalist interior, loft or retail space. Depending on your on-site rail/construction, it can also still be used as a sliding door.

The mesh and wood show age and signs of use—exactly what gives this object its character and story.
