Product Details

Expressive Balinese wooden mask dating from around 1980, hand-carved and painted in deep black, red and gold tones.

Dimensions: H 15 × W 17 × D 35.5 cm

The mask depicts a mythical bird inspired by Garuda or Jatayu, two important figures in Hindu mythology and traditional Balinese dance theatre. Garuda symbolises strength and protection, while Jatayu is known for his courage and self-sacrifice in the Ramayana epic.

The exceptionally long black beak, large round eyes and wide-open mouth with sharp teeth give the mask a powerful, theatrical presence. The detailed wood carving and vibrant painted decoration highlight traditional Balinese craftsmanship.

With its distinctive shape and expressive character, the mask makes a striking piece of wall decor or a sculptural interior accent. A remarkable example of Balinese folk art that adds character to contemporary and eclectic interiors.

Good vintage condition with normal signs of wear and areas of paint loss consistent with age.
