Bauhaus Desk Lamp by Schanzenbach & Co., ca. 1930–1940

An authentic German Bauhaus desk lamp dating from the 1930s, produced by Schanzenbach & Co. of Frankfurt, also known under the Schaco brand name.

The lamp is composed of a heavy metal base, an elegantly curved arm and a broad conical shade. Its clearly expressed construction, restrained geometry and complete absence of unnecessary decoration directly reflect Bauhaus principles, in which function, material and form were treated as a unified whole.

An adjustable joint allows the shade to be positioned in the desired direction. The rotary switch is mounted directly on top of the shade and forms a characteristic functional detail.

The entirely black finish gives the lamp a strong industrial silhouette. Its compact proportions and directional light made this type of lamp ideal for use on a desk, drawing table or workbench.

Schanzenbach & Co. was founded in Frankfurt in 1899 and produced high-quality lighting for domestic, industrial and public interiors. This lamp is a strong example of German Bauhaus lighting from the interwar period, combining technical simplicity with distinctly modernist design.

Today, it would look particularly striking on a desk, low cabinet, bedside table or within an interior featuring modernist, industrial or vintage elements.

In attractive original antique condition, with normal signs of use, wear, minor discolouration and patina consistent with its age. The wiring and plug have been renewed. The shade remains adjustable and the original rotary switch is positioned on top of the lamp housing.
