Elegant and rare set of two lidded porcelain bowls – Kutani, Japan, ca. 1930–1950

This elegant and rare set of two lidded porcelain bowls is a beautiful example of traditional Japanese craftsmanship from the Kutani region.

The bowls date from around 1930–1950 and are marked on the base with the character 九谷 (Kutani), confirming their origin.

Dimensions (per bowl): Height 9.5 cm, Diameter 10.5 cm

Each bowl is hand-painted all around in rich colors and fine detail. One side features blossoming branches (possibly ume) in white, red, and yellow, combined with geometric patterns and gilded accents. The opposite side shows two crossed farming tools – a rake and an ear of grain on a stalk – flanked by stylized pinecones. This imagery likely symbolizes harvest time, fertility, and a deep connection to nature.

The foot and rim are decorated with ornamental bands in gold, brown, and turquoise, giving the set a refined appearance.

The set is in good condition with minimal signs of use. No visible damage; the colors and gilding are well preserved.

Kutani porcelain is renowned for its vivid colors and refined hand-painted decoration. It has been produced in Ishikawa, Japan, since the 17th century, with artisans combining traditional techniques and artistic expression.

A graceful and rare set – ideal for collectors or as a refined decorative accent in any interior.
