Chinese Wooden Statue – Shou Lao, God of Longevity – 1930s
Beautifully hand-carved wooden statue of Shou Lao (also known as Shouxing), the Chinese god of longevity, rooted in Taoist tradition. This piece dates to the 1930s and was crafted in China from a dense, dark wood – possibly camphor or alder.
Dimensions: height 48 cm, width 17 cm, depth 13 cm.
Shou Lao is easily recognized by his high forehead, long beard, and the peach of immortality he holds in one hand. In the other, he carries a gnarled staff – a classic symbol of wisdom and old age.
The sculpture is rich in symbolic detail, featuring finely carved elements such as crossed scrolls and decorative motifs on the back of his robe. The strong, stylized base, resembling rock or cloud forms, enhances the spiritual presence of the piece.
