Product Details

This expressive wooden Hannya mask was hand-carved and then hand-painted.

Dimensions: height 28 cm, width 17 cm, depth 11 cm.

The dramatic facial expression, horns, and finely detailed teeth are characteristic of the Hannya motif from Japanese Noh theatre.

In that tradition, Hannya represents a female character who, through jealousy and overwhelming emotion, transforms into a demon-like figure. At the same time, the mask is often seen as a powerful protective image—keeping negative energy at bay and combining tension and beauty in a single object.

The eyes have a gold-toned finish with a beautiful sheen. The interior is lacquered in red and bears an inscription by the artist.

Today, this makes a striking decorative piece for the wall—perfect in an entryway, studio, office, or shop setting. A true eye-catcher with strong character and symbolism, and easy to combine in a contemporary interior.

Condition: good, with age-related marks and light wear consistent with this type of object. Ready to hang or display.
