Decorative Japanese Ito-guruma Spinning Wheel, 1910–1920
Antique Japanese ito-guruma (糸車), a traditional spinning wheel crafted from wood and bamboo. Japan, late Meiji to early Taishō period.
Dimensions: H 23 cm, diameter 60 cm.
The large wheel is constructed with numerous finely arranged radial spokes, creating a striking graphic pattern. The combination of wood, bamboo and a warm natural patina gives the piece a strong and authentic presence.
Originally, an ito-guruma was a functional tool used for spinning and working thread. Today, it makes a beautiful sculptural interior object, either displayed freestanding as an atmospheric accent or mounted on a wall as a distinctive decorative piece. Its open construction also creates beautiful shadow patterns on the wall.
A characterful, handmade Japanese utilitarian object with an exceptional decorative presence.
Good antique condition with normal signs of age and use consistent with its age.
