Cheerful Tanuki Statue, Shigaraki Ware, 1970s, Shōwa Period, Japan.

This Tanuki statue, crafted from Shigaraki clay, represents a mythical creature from Japanese folklore.

Dimensions: height 26 cm, width 20 cm, depth 18 cm.

The Tanuki is a mischievous Japanese raccoon dog with magical powers, characterized by its round belly, oversized scrotum, and a bottle of sake.

In Japan, Tanuki statues are placed at the entrance of homes, shops, and restaurants to bring good fortune, protection, and prosperity.

Tanuki belong to the yokai, mythical creatures known for their trickery, mastery of disguise, and shape-shifting abilities, but they are also easily fooled themselves.
