Large Japanese Enamel Advertising Sign “Nippon Gas”, 1950s
This vintage Japanese enamel advertising sign was made for Nippon Gas Chemical, often abbreviated as Nichigas.
Dimensions: height 182 cm, width 30 cm, depth 0.5 cm.
Tall, narrow signs like this were commonly hung on building facades and at points of sale in the postwar years to promote gas products. The typography is arranged vertically, and the company name at the bottom appears in an older, historically used style of writing, which adds to the sign’s authenticity.
Visually, it makes a strong graphic statement: bright white enamel with bold black lettering and striking red accents, including the logo at the top. Its elongated format makes it an ideal wall feature in an entryway, studio, shop space, or a clean, minimalist interior.
The sign shows beautiful, honest wear, with rust along the edges and in the corners, as well as small chips and signs of use that suit an original industrial object perfectly.
Hanging holes are present at the top and bottom (as shown in the photos), making it easy to mount. The reverse also shows a deeply aged patina.
A rare, characterful hōrō kanban with a distinctive Japanese vintage feel: restrained and typographic, yet warm and lively thanks to its timeworn surface.
