Large Japanese Handwoven Rattan Basket Bowl, 1960–1970s
An exceptionally large Japanese basket bowl with a low, wide shape and beautifully rhythmic weaving in warm reddish-brown tones.
Dimensions: height 20 cm, diameter 90 cm.
This handwoven bowl dates from the Shōwa period, ca. 1960–1970. The piece is likely made from rattan or a related natural woven fibre, with strong rounded strands and an open structure that feels both light and architectural.
The bowl has a beautiful balance between functionality and decorative strength. Its low rounded form, broad woven rim, and concentric construction give the object a calm, graphic presence. The warm reddish-brown colour and subtle sheen create a rich natural accent in a contemporary interior.
Thanks to its generous size, this basket bowl works beautifully as a large fruit bowl, magazine or textile basket, centrepiece on a low table, or decorative object on a cabinet, pedestal, or floor. It also works particularly well as a wall object, where the weaving becomes almost like a natural relief with depth and shadow.
The bowl is in very good condition. An elegant and striking piece that brings together craftsmanship, simplicity, and everyday usability.
