Large Japanese Wooden Suisha / Water Wheel Wall Decor, 1900s

Impressive large Japanese wooden water wheel, also known as suisha or mizuguruma, probably dating from the mid-20th century.

Dimensions: diameter 168 cm, depth 27 cm.

The wheel is constructed from light wood, most likely a Japanese softwood such as sugi or pine, and has developed a warm dark-brown patina. The central hub, long spokes and rhythmically arranged paddles create a highly graphic and sculptural form, with an open architectural presence that almost resembles a large wooden sun or kinetic installation.

Originally, this type of water wheel referred to traditional Japanese water mills, where flowing water powered the wheel for practical use. Today, this piece is above all an exceptional decorative object, full of atmosphere, history and visual strength.

Beautiful as a statement piece in a large room, shop interior, entrance hall, conservatory, restaurant or Japanese-inspired interior. The wheel can be placed freestanding or, with the correct support, mounted dramatically on a wall. It also combines beautifully with plants, ceramics and natural materials for a strong wabi-sabi atmosphere.

In very good vintage condition, with a rich timeworn patina, normal signs of use and age, and some small missing elements consistent with its age, material and original function.
