Large Japanese Ceramic Tanuki, 1960s–1970s

Large decorative Japanese tanuki statue, made of glazed ceramic and most likely dating from the 1960s–1970s.

This striking tanuki is richly detailed with a large straw hat, round belly, expressive eyes, walking staff, sake bottle and pouch — classic symbols associated with prosperity, hospitality, trade and good fortune.

The tanuki is one of Japan’s best-known lucky figures and is often placed near shops, restaurants and homes as a symbol of welcome, protection and business success. With its generous size, warm brown-and-white glaze and playful expression, this piece has a strong decorative presence.
