Large Polychrome Wooden Temple Figures on Lotus Bases, Korea, 19th century

This impressive pair of hand-carved, polychrome figures is made from wood and stands on pronounced lotus bases.

Dimensions: height 101 cm, width 30 cm, depth 23 cm (per figure).

The raised-hand gesture and the offering of objects, combined with the lotus-shaped base, strongly suggest Buddhist temple or altar sculpture.

What makes them so distinctive is their direct, almost theatrical presence. The faces are powerfully modeled and highly expressive, with bold eyebrows, red accents, and an intense, lively gaze. The robes are painted in layered colours, with visible brushwork and decorative motifs that add depth and movement. The lotus bases reinforce the sacred character while also giving the figures a strong, architectural silhouette.

The set is in well-worn condition with clear traces of age and use: paint loss, surface wear, craquelure, small cracks, and damage to the wood (visible in particular around the bases and edges). This is precisely what gives the figures their authenticity and charm.
