Large Wooden Japanese Manaita Cutting Board, Low Display Table, 1980s
Large Japanese manaita – a traditional cutting and work board – from the 1980s, made from kiri (paulownia) wood.
Dimensions: height 9 cm, width 90 cm, depth 80 cm.
This board has never been used: the surface is beautifully even, with only very light storage marks, so it is still in almost mint condition today.
Underneath the board runs a round wooden rod that fits into the openings of the crossbars. This rod is removable and can be used as a traditional Japanese menbo (rolling pin).
The surface has a warm light brown tone with a fine wood grain. This makes the manaita not only practical in the kitchen – as a generous cutting board or serving board for sushi, bread or tea – but also very suitable as a low wabi-sabi display table. Use it to present ceramics, books, ikebana or art objects, or as an authentic element in a tea ceremony setting.
A versatile piece of Japanese craftsmanship that beautifully combines functionality and understated beauty.
