Wooden Japanese Writing Table with Folding Legs and Drawers, 1930s

The table stands on four turned legs connected by long stretchers. The legs can be folded in, allowing the table to be stored completely flat.

The wood has a warm mid-brown tone with a lively grain pattern. Across the surface you can see traces of use, ink stains and light discolouration, all testifying to many years of intensive use. There are old, visible repairs – honest craftsmanship that gives the table a distinctly lived-in character. The metal drawer handles are simple and functional, reinforcing the utilitarian feel of a traditional worktable.

Around 1930 this piece would have been used as a low writing table, in combination with a floor cushion or low chair.
