Wooden Keyaki Shogi Game Table, Unique Sugi Side Table, 1920s
Characterful Japanese shogi game table made from a solid block of sugi, Japanese cedar.
Dimensions: height 18 cm, width 32.5 cm, depth 30 cm.
The top shows the classic shogi playing field, finely incised into the surface. Years of use have softened the lines and created beautiful variations in colour in the wood – exactly the kind of ageing that gives this piece so much atmosphere.
The table stands on four carved, faceted legs. The combination of the heavy top with the compact legs gives it a pleasing, balanced shape and makes it a real eye-catcher, even when it’s not being used for play.
The table can still be used as a shogi board, but it works just as well as a low side table or display: perfect for a vase, bonsai, ceramics, a small stack of art books, or as a piece in a tea ceremony setting.
A simple yet striking piece that, with its warm wood tones and visible traces of use, brings an instant Japanese accent and a touch of wabi-sabi into your interior.
