Japanese Bunko Writing Chest, Portable Document Box, 1900s
This compact writing chest is a bunko (文庫) from the Meiji period: a traditional Japanese storage box for paperwork and writing tools, designed to keep everything organised and safely in one place.
The design is restrained and practical, with handsome iron fittings that instantly give it character.
Dimensions: height 35 cm, width 45 cm, depth 41.5 cm.
At the bottom are two drawers with original metal plates and pulls—ideal for pens, stamps, stationery, cables, or small documents. The top section is a lockable compartment with a metal clasp; inside, it is divided into two compartments, perfect for folders, notes, envelopes, or everyday administration. A metal handle on top makes it easy to move the box from desk to cabinet, or from workspace to living area.
The wood has developed a warm, timeworn patina with visible signs of use that suit its age, and the piece feels solid and functional. Today, it works just as well as a practical organiser as it does as a calm, authentic accent in a clean, modern interior.
