Product Details

Dimensions: height 34.5 cm, width 29 cm, depth 3 cm.

A refined Japanese wooden wall panel dating from the 1950s, entirely carved by hand and decorated with an elegant flowering magnolia branch.

The blossoms, buds and leaves are executed in high relief, standing out boldly against the deeply carved background. Different tones of wood emphasise the individual forms: the warmer petals and foliage contrast beautifully with the dark central field and richly textured border.

The background and broad frame have also been carefully worked. Rhythmic chisel marks and small faceted cuts create a lively surface that responds differently to the light throughout the day. This gives the panel a strong tactile and almost sculptural presence.

Its asymmetrical composition and natural subject reflect the Japanese appreciation of seasonal beauty and organic form. Magnolia is associated with spring in Japan and has long been a favoured subject within decorative art.

A signature or artist’s mark in red lacquer appears in the lower left corner. A hanging fixture is attached at the top, allowing the panel to be displayed immediately.

In attractive vintage condition, with light signs of use, minor irregularities and natural variations in colour consistent with its age, wooden material and handcrafted production.

A characterful Japanese wall object combining refined woodcarving, natural materials and a powerful graphic composition.
