Japanese Ceramic Makura Pillow, circa 1950
Distinctive Japanese ceramic makura pillow dating from around 1950, crafted in traditional blue-and-white porcelain with refined decorations of Japanese guardian lions, known as karajishi, and elegant floral motifs.
Dimensions: H 11 × W 21.5 × D 11 cm
The gently curved top features an openwork lattice pattern framed by detailed floral decorations. The ribbed sides give the piece an elegant, architectural form. Additional openings on the underside, together with the lattice, allow for natural air circulation.
Such ceramic pillows were traditionally used to support the head or neck while resting and to preserve elaborate hairstyles. Blue Japanese calligraphy can be found on the underside.
Today, this distinctive piece makes a refined decorative accent in a Japanese-inspired, wabi-sabi or minimalist interior.
Good vintage condition with minor signs of wear, areas of surface wear and a visible hairline crack on the side, consistent with age.
