Product Details

Dimensions: height 51.5 cm, width 40 cm, depth 5 cm.

A remarkable Japanese medical teaching display featuring a collection of three-dimensional models illustrating teeth, dental diseases and restorative treatments, dating from the early 20th century.

At the centre is a large anatomical cross-section of a tooth, showing its internal structure and several affected areas. It is surrounded by smaller, carefully painted models representing a variety of dental conditions, damage and restorative techniques. Each example retains its original Japanese label. Treatments including an inlay and an amalgam filling are also represented.

The models are arranged against a black background, allowing their soft ivory, yellow and reddish-brown tones to stand out beautifully. The original Japanese text panels and printed explanations give the composition an authentic scientific and historical character. The name of the producer, Japan Medical Specimen Co., Ltd., appears along the bottom.

The display is preserved in its original light-coloured wooden frame behind glass. An old label is also attached to the wooden reverse. Displays of this type were most likely used for teaching dental students, dentists or other medical professionals.

Today, it makes an exceptional decorative collector’s object for a cabinet of curiosities, dental practice, medical interior or collection of historical anatomical and scientific objects.

We have two examples available. Their arrangement and some of the included models differ slightly, as shown in the photographs.

In very good antique condition, with normal wear, discolouration and signs of age to the frame and materials. No distracting damage.

A fascinating and rare Japanese educational object combining medical history, craftsmanship and graphic presentation.
